CDC Awards PVM IDIQ Contract to Support Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Disease Surveillance and Response

On September 14, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded PVM an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract to support the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED).

This new contract expands PVM’s ongoing 6+ year relationship with CDC to support and enhance its surveillance and response systems and advance CDC’s data modernization initiative. Specifically, PVM will focus on DFWED’s surveillance and response infrastructure, with a goal of expediting the identification and investigation of health threats—ranging from foodborne, waterborne, and zoonotic diseases, to detecting and containing fungal infections. Ultimately, we aim to unlock the full potential of technology for DFWED to make significant improvements and contribute to a healthier nation overall.

Throughout the program, PVM will work on DFWED’s mission-critical systems, including but not limited to the Data Collation and Integration for Public Health Event Response (DCIPHER), NCEZID’s EZ Data Exchange (EZDX), and Enterprise Data, Analytics, and Visualization (EDAV) systems. Our experienced public health team will leverage its deep technical knowledge of the DCIPHER and DFWED spaces to deliver effective system solutions and enhancements.

PVM will support software development activities through project management, design, testing, and technical assistance as we collaboratively work with DFWED to modernize their various technical systems and workflows, and add additional functionality to their programs and systems. This includes, but isn’t limited to:

• Integrating new data sources and tools into existing systems so that investigators have the most complete and robust outlook of variables and factors during investigations.
• Creating new procedural datasets that can be actively updated and controlled by select users, empowering CDC personnel to do more with their data.
• Creating and modifying metrics dashboards for jurisdictional, territorial, state, and national partners—streamlining and ensuring clarity in the data sharing process.
• Creating and maintaining unique data entry interfaces, making it easier for CDC and their partners to share data.
• Developing new reporting and visualization capabilities for their data, so that analyses, interpretations, and results are shared quickly and efficiently with the right people.
• Building and maintaining data linkages between at least 12 surveillance systems, so that there is no gap in data or duplicative data collection processes.
• Adhering to CDC Enterprise Architecture compliance requirements.
• Providing software testing and quality assurance to improve performance of critical system performance.

The work CDC and PVM will tackle together ensures the improvement for overall usability of DFWED’s enterprise platforms, streamlines data collection, analysis, visualization, and dissemination of data, and gives the tools to scientists and officials as they protect our nation against various public health threats. Whether that is a simple migration of a historic dataset from an outdated database into DCIPHER, or the integration of a natural language processing tool designed to parse out potential sources of infections from submitted exposure data in near-real time, PVM will get the job done.
